Throughout the semester, the fiction editorial team has prepared and worked to add quality fiction works to the Turning Tides journal. At the start of the semester we all had varying levels of aptitude when it came to reading and analyzing literary work so we spent a few weeks training and refining our craft. We read works such as A Reader’s Manifesto and “What is an Editor” which helped us grasp our upcoming task. Then we practiced by editing the original rough draft of Raymond Carver’s “So Much Water So Close To Home,” which was an eye opening experience in terms of how different rough and final drafts can be. As submissions began to pile up we read the works and as a team made decisions whether they should be accepted. Then letters of response were sent out and we began to format the works in their final space on the website. Your submissions gave us the opportunity to push ourselves as writers, editors, and people. We were able to apply the lessons from the beginning of our semester and help us hone our editing skills while skill preserving your unique voice and perspective. Staying as true to the original piece was of utmost importance to our team, as your writing is a reflection of you and your life experiences. Your background, your interests, all of these things we value and want to ensure that they are reflected in our journal. Creativity is important, and it shows the intrinsic motivation that makes you so successful at this academy. We’re grateful for your time, effort, and passion for this project. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your journey as an author.
